Noah Marik of Omaha cheers on the Huskers during a weather delay.

Some quick thoughts in the wake of Nebraska's decision to cancel the season opener:

1. Not playing the game Saturday night is the right call. The main reasons are player and fan safety. You didn’t want to start a game around midnight and go until 3 or 4 a.m. A majority of the fans had headed out by 9 p.m. I’m sure there was some consideration about not playing Scott Frost’s first game in a mostly empty stadium at 2 a.m. But especially the way the weather was coming in waves like the Wisconsin offensive line, it was fruitless. I wish they could have postponed it until Sunday, but the weather doesn’t look a lot better. Now Colorado is the season opener and the Buffs already have a game under their belt. That’s not ideal. Apparently the hang-up on playing Sunday was neither school wanted to mess up its routine for next week, pushing the day off to Monday and having one less day to prepare. Meanwhile, it’s still raining.

2. I haven’t been able to ask this yet, but my question is, if officials from both schools and Fox knew this weather was coming, couldn’t the game have been moved up to Saturday afternoon? If Fox had needed to tape delay it and show it on Saturday night, fine. This seemed unnecessary, considering this storm was widespread. It’s probably not that easy. Nothing in TV ever is.

3. If this game does end up happening, I would assume it will resume, not start again, with Nebraska having the ball at its 25. That means no second Tunnel Walk. The new one looked good to me. I really liked hearing Tom Osborne’s voice over the old highlights from the ’70s. NU mixed “Sirius” in there and then went to a new song. So everyone got something and everyone’s happy, right?
