The undefeated 1954 Omaha University football team played in the ninth annual Tangerine Bowl on January 1, 1955. Lloyd Cardwell coached the team to a 7-6 victory over Eastern Kentucky State. The team was the first from the Midwest to play in this bowl. The Tangerine Bowl was subsequently renamed the Citrus Bowl.

Photographs documenting events leading up to the Tangerine Bowl, activities in Florida, and the celebration and events after the victory are available online from UNO Libraries Digital Collections. The Tangerine Bowl game film and radio play-by-play are also available online along with other OU and UNO football films from UNO Libraries' Archives and Special Collections. The department is interested in adding additional films, programs, memorabilia, photographs, and other material to the archives that document football and other sports teams at OU and UNO. Contact the department at unoasc@unomaha.edu or 402.554.2362 to discuss the collection further. The exhibit is open Monday-Friday on the lower level of Criss Library.
