The blizzard that struck northwest Nebraska and the tornadoes that hit northeast Nebraska were part of the same deadly weather system, according to the National Weather Service.

Three family members from Lincoln died on snow-slickened roads in northwest Nebraska. On the eastern side of Nebraska, one person was seriously injured near Wayne and about a dozen others sustained less serious injuries from the tornadoes.

Early next week, conditions will begin to make a change toward more seasonal weather for mid-October in the Omaha area.

Wednesday night’s rain dropped .71 inches at the weather service’s Valley office and 1.02 inches at Omaha’s Eppley Airfield.

Ignore the thermometer today, gusty winds are going to make it feel chillier than actual temperatures. Omaha's high today is forecast in the mid-70s, and the wind chill is expected to bring that down into the low 50s, according to the National Weather Service.
