Senior trio returns to lead Hawkeye defense that struggled in 2012
Iowa senior linebackers Christian Kirksey, left, James Morris, right, and Anthony Hitchens will lead a defense that ranked 105th in tackles for loss and 113th in sacks last season. “Guys right now are hungry. Maybe a little bit embarrassed. Like they have something to prove,” Morris said.

IOWA CITY — They signed scholarship papers to play Iowa football in early 2010, perhaps the very height of the program’s history.
It was one month after an Orange Bowl win over Georgia Tech and six months before coach Kirk Ferentz would get a 10-year contract extension. The Hawkeyes were a preseason top 10 team in both major polls — a Rose Bowl contender and BCS national title dark horse — and freshman linebackers Anthony Hitchens, Christian Kirksey and James Morris were burning their redshirts, priming to be part of a team with major momentum.
