IOWA CITY — They signed scholarship papers to play Iowa football in early 2010, perhaps the very height of the program’s history.

It was one month after an Orange Bowl win over Georgia Tech and six months before coach Kirk Ferentz would get a 10-year contract extension. The Hawkeyes were a preseason top 10 team in both major polls — a Rose Bowl contender and BCS national title dark horse — and freshman linebackers Anthony Hitchens, Christian Kirksey and James Morris were burning their redshirts, priming to be part of a team with major momentum.
