Malcolm Armstead, meet Carl Nicks.
After averaging 2.2 points as a freshman at Indiana State in 1976-77, its coaches convinced Nicks to go to junior college to refine his game. The 6-foot-1 lefty averaged 22.4 points in one season at Gulf County (Fla.) Community College, then returned to the Sycamores and guided them to the NCAA finals in 1979, with a little help from a guy named Larry Bird.
