Coaching great Nelson finally receives degree

Fifty years ago, Don Nelson left the University of Iowa eight credits and a student-teaching requirement shy of a degree. Nelson took correspondence classes to complete the credits. But it took the most coaching wins in NBA history for the university to decide Nelson didn't need to be a student teacher to earn a diploma.

The Washington Redskins have signed fifth-round draft pick Adam Gettis of Iowa. Gettis is a guard chosen with the 141st overall selection. He started all 13 games at right guard for Iowa last year and was a second-team All-Big Ten selection by the conference’s coaches.

Iowa heavyweight wrestler Bobby Telford faces a charge of public intoxication after an incident last weekend outside an Iowa City bar. The redshirt freshman finished the season 29-9 and placed fifth at the NCAA tournament to earn All-America honors.

Notes: Bengals get Prater in fifth round

The Cincinnati Bengals took Iowa cornerback Shaun Prater with the first of their three picks in the fifth round on Saturday. Prater played his high school football at Omaha Central. Cornerback was a key area for the Bengals to upgrade in the draft, with Leon Hall coming back from a torn Achilles tendon. Prater was the 156th player taken overall.

Hawkeyes to wear '20s throwbacks
Hawkeyes to wear '20s throwbacks

The Iowa football team will wear 1921-22 throwback uniforms when the Hawkeyes host Iowa State in the annual Cy-Hawk Trophy game on Sept. 8 in Kinnick Stadium. The game will mark Iowa's third in throwback uniforms. The Hawkeyes wore uniforms modeled after the 1958 Iowa squad when they defeated Ball State 45-0 on Sept. 25, 2010.
