McKewon: Ex-Husker Burroughs fixes gaze on gold

Oxygen-starved muscles. Torn knee ligaments. Mangled ears. Broken teeth he had to spit out mid-match, requiring an emergency root canal. Former Nebraska wrestler Jordan Burroughs rolled all of that hardship into two national titles and an ongoing pursuit of an Olympic gold medal.

Huskers eliminated as bats go quiet

Friday's 6-2 loss to No. 6 seed Ohio State bounced the Huskers from the Big Ten tournament after a mistake-filled effort in their final game of the season. NU had plenty of chances, but it ended up getting outplayed and outexecuted in front of a reporter-estimated 500 at Huntington Park — what was a familiar display, coach Darin Erstad said.

Notes: NU's Erstad impressed by OSU starter

NU coach Darin Erstad was watching Ohio State's 5-4 loss to Purdue Thursday night. He saw Brian King warming up in the bullpen. At least three times. No way would King last long in his start Friday, right? That may have been a legitimate assumption, which is why King's six innings caught the attention of Nebraska's coach during the Buckeyes' 6-2 win, which eliminated the Huskers from the Big Ten tournament.

Hander gets Nebraska rolling at Big Ten tournament

Nebraska's Ryan Hander knew it was only a matter of time before the high-powered NU bats heated up. But he couldn't let an elimination game get out of hand. So as he twice teetered on the brink of disaster, the junior right-hander reminded himself not to lose his poise. Stick to the approach, he thought. Give your teammates a chance.

Notes: Huskers, foes share similar scenarios

Nebraska will be a desperate team playing simply to extend its season on Friday. Problem is, both of its potential opponents are in the same scenario. If Ohio State and Michigan State want to keep playing after this weekend, they have to win the Big Ten tournament. The Spartans do have an outside chance at receiving an at-large berth in the NCAA tournament, but they'll likely be overlooked if they finish 1-2 in Columbus.
