Laura Haller of Ralston was honored at Creighton University’s May commencement exercises with the Spirit of Creighton Award, one of the university’s most prestigious recognitions.

A release from the university said: “Since coming to Creighton, Haller has been a positive force for others, choosing activities that led her to challenge her peers, create opportunities for personal development, serve others and lead by example.”

Haller served as a resident adviser, mentored underclassmen and through the Cortina Community — an academic, service-based living-learning community for sophomores — she sought holistic development opportunities through service projects and coursework.

She was also president of the Creighton Bird Cage, a student organization aimed at encouraging CU’s athletic teams.

CU also said that in the spirit of St. Ignatius — caring for the poor and marginalized — Haller put an emphasis on community outreach.

She has worked with the Jesuit Middle School and volunteered at organizations such as Precious Memories Daycare, Lindenwood Nursing Home, the Open Door Mission, Kids Can and more.

In 2012, she spent six weeks working in an alternative school for Aboriginal children in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Haller graduated with a major in elementary education with an emphasis in science and a specialization in children with disabilities.

She will continue her community-minded and Ignatian pursuits as a special education teacher with Teach for America in Denver.
