The Papillion-La Vista/Papillion-La Vista South boys swimming and diving team took third place in this weekend's Metro Conference Championships at Millard West.

The P-LV/P-LV South boys finished with 241 points, only behind winner Creighton Prep (538) and Millard South (251). Bellevue West finished in the ninth spot and Bryan and Bellevue East took 11th and 12th, respectively.

The P-LV/P-LV South girls had the best area finish by claiming fourth with 278 points. Millard North won the girls meet with 385 points. Bellevue West also took ninth in the girls meet. Bryan placed 10th and Bellevue East 11th.

“We were all pretty happy with how we swam at Metro,” Papio swim coach Nick Baker said. “We had a lot of season-best swims and even broke two school records.”

The Metro meet is a good precursor the State Meet next weekend, and Baker feels like his team is in a good place heading to state after the third-place finish at Metro.

“After a couple more weeks of practicing and resting, we are hoping to build on that performance and get some high placings at the state meet,” Baker said. “These kids have been working hard all season and are very focused on the state meet, so we think that we will swim very well.”

Nick Robbins and Jeff Cavanaugh both picked up runner-up finishes to lead P-LV/P-LV South. Robbins took second in the 100-yard breaststroke to go with a ninth place finish in the 200 individual medley. Cavanaugh took runner-up in the 500 freestyle and 10th in the 200 freestyle.

Bellevue West was led by Eric Smits, who took ninth in the 100 butterfly and 10th in the 200 individual medley.

The T-birds had the best area showing in Thursday's Metro Diving Competition. Teammates Danny McMaster and Nick Fritch occupied the seventh and eighth spots, respectively.

The P-LV/P-LV South girls were led to its fourth place finish by three runner-up finishes.
