Two MATHCOUNTS teams from Gretna Middle School placed in the top five at the 3M MATHCOUNTS competition in Valley, Neb., Jan. 27.

The team of Jacob Mann, Harrison Kallman, Kaitlyn Ryan and Camden Olds won the competition while the team of Max Mannewitz, Christian Bokowski, Marissa Ellingson and Casey Downing placed fifth. Tami Kuhn is the math coach for both teams.

MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment competition program that promotes middle school mathematic achievement.

MATHCOUNTS is one of the country’s largest and most successful educational partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students.

3M in Valley is the area sponsor for Gretna. Twenty-four teams competed in the 2014 competition.

The MATHCOUNTS competition provides an incentive and atmosphere for students to push themselves to achieve more in mathematics.

The competition consists of fun and creative problems that promote critical thinking and problem solving skills.

MATHCOUNTS has a written and oral round, as well as individual and team components. Problems focus on the sixth- through eighth- grade standards of the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics.

Teams advance through a school, chapter and state competition until the final 224 students are selected to advance to the MATHCOUNTS national competition held each May in Washington, D.C.

The next competition will be the Eastern Regional competition on Saturday in Omaha. Winning teams will advance to the state competition in March.
