Bellevue’s third Taco Bell and Nebraska’s third Jersey Mike’s sandwich store will open on land currently occupied by the Fantasy’s gas station at 15th Street and Cornhusker Road.

Larry Forman, an Omaha attorney representing Thackeray Companies of Omaha, told the City Council Oct. 28 those two stores would be joined by a Verizon store occupying two bays.

A fifth bay was proposed to Dunkin’ Donuts, he said, which declined because the Taco Bell drive-thru would leave too little room for its own drive-thru.

Forman said the developer is now looking for a non-restaurant tenant to fill the strip mall’s fifth and final bay.

Jersey Mike’s is a New Jersey-based submarine sandwich store with more than 750 locations across 10 states.

The chain currently has two stores in Lincoln. The Bellevue store will be its first foray into the Omaha metropolitan area.

Council members voted 6-0 to rezone the area for general business operations.

Forman said the new-look Thunderbird Plaza will be a better fit for Bellevue West High School and for adjacent residences than the Fantasy’s gas station had been.

Now that rezoning has been granted, Forman said the developer is eager to begin demolition and earth moving before the winter sets in.

The first project will be removal of the underground fuel tanks, he said.
