Bill Nye the Science Guy has worked much of his career to make science more accessible, relevant and fun for kids and their parents. This past weekend, he and organizers of the Nebraska Science Festival worked toward that important shared goal. The festival treated guests to a Nye talk at the Joslyn Art Museum, along with interactive events that stretched from the Durham Museum to the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Dentistry in Lincoln. Organizers said it was nice to see fascination on the faces of attendees young and old. It’s even better to see our community selling the wonder of science and technology.
Plans to create a special military medal for drone operators and cyberwarriors have been canceled. Instead, Pentagon officials will develop a special designation to add to existing medals that would honor the contributions of these high-tech troops. The now-canceled medal was to have ranked higher than some traditional combat medals, such as the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Critics, including veterans groups, were right to question that plan.
