The erroneous image of the Great Plains as a barren desert was created early.
President Thomas Jefferson wrote of “immense and trackless deserts” when the region was obtained in the Louisiana Purchase. Explorer Zebulon Pike wrote in 1810 that, “These vast plains of the Western Hemisphere may become in time equally celebrated as the sandy deserts of Africa.”
