When shots rang out last year in an alley near 31st Street and Fowler Avenue, the system - which essentially pinpoints the location of gunshots - enabled two Omaha police officers to quickly reach the scene. They apprehended a 33-year-old man who this week was sentenced to life in prison for the killing. ShotSpotter is a valuable tool in Omaha's efforts against gun violence.

The mysterious benefactor who gave away cashier's checks for $1 million in the 1950s TV series "The Millionaire" might be shocked by a new USB Investor Watch survey. It found that 70 percent of investors who were polled said that a million bucks didn't make them wealthy. A million's not chicken feed, for sure, but the federal government's inflation calculator does show that it takes $8.7 million today to match the buying power of $1 million in 1955, the year the show debuted.
