Flights backed up at airports from Philadelphia to New York as a week-old storm that confounded forecasters along the East Coast spread more than a foot of heavy, wet snow across the Northeast.

Winter storm warnings were posted for much of southern New England into northern New Jersey, and coastal communities in Massachusetts braced against wind-driven waves.
