Plattsmouth students' tribute — and $1,400 gift — turn tough firefighters into teary-eyed softies
Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Department members get a standing ovation Thursday from the students of Plattsmouth Middle School. The students collected $1,400 through fundraising events to thank the local firefighters for their dedication and hard work.

Firefighters generally are pretty tough.
It's a tough job, after all. And when firefighters with the Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Department and other area squads fought a Jan. 2 fire that gutted a historic downtown building, they battled not only the blaze but a roof collapse and zero-degree temperatures that turned water to a coating of ice.
