Bitterly cold, blizzard-like weather swept across Iowa during this week in 1982.
The arctic cold snap lasted from Jan. 7 to Jan. 11, reaching its worst on Jan. 10. On that date, temperatures plummeted to 20 degrees below zero or lower across most of Iowa. Winds of 25 to 40 mph produced wind chills of 50 degrees below zero and greater, according to the National Weather Service.
