A blanket of snow intensifies the cold that accompanies an Arctic outbreak, which helps explain why such cold weather has settled over Nebraska the latter part of this week.
Snow-covered ground can contribute to a 10-degree drop, more or less, in the temperature, meteorologists say. Wind speed and cloud cover also affect temperatures on winter nights.
