Snowplowing operations in the eastern United States have been made more difficult because of a shortage of road salt. Prices have increased fivefold as high demand outstrips the ability to mine salt.
Earlier this month, Connecticut declared a state of emergency to speed delivery of salt to communities that had exhausted supplies.
