The Omaha Smelting Works and Union Pacific shops were flooded in 1881. The smelter later became known as Asarco.

Back in April 1881, roiling, debris-filled icy floodwaters surged down the Missouri River, reshaping the landscape and defining for decades the strength of the Mighty Mo.
The flood of 1881 would become the flood of record that would determine the size of the dams built on the Missouri River from the 1930s to the 1960s.
