Life beneath the streets: Downtown sidewalks conceal a hidden world underground
Phil Hawkins creates art two stories below the streets in the basement of the Farnam 1600 Building. A city project in the area means underground vaults such as this one are getting new attention. Some will be filled in. Others will be inspected, worked around and then largely forgotten once more.

Two stories below the downtown Omaha sidewalk where people wait for buses and walk to lunch, Phil Hawkins works in a dark, narrow room he's filled with canvases and cans of paint.
It's quiet down here, deep below the offices and condos and the eerie, nearly empty basement that was once the vault of the First National Bank.
