Dr. Joann Schaefer stepped down Friday from her post as Nebraska's chief medical officer, and co-workers bade her farewell at the State Office Building in Lincoln. On May 1, she'll start a new job as a vice president at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska. Five years ago, Schaefer underwent a liver transplant.

Just think of the irony: Of all people, a woman who would die young if she didn't get a liver transplant soon was the state's chief medical officer.
At 40, Dr. Joann Schaefer of Omaha, whose job entailed looking out for the health of all Nebraskans, faced that personal incongruity — and her own mortality.
