In neighborhood where 5-year-old was killed, fear never far below the surface
Osman Hilawle, 21, a college student who lives in the duplex unit next door to Payton Benson's family, peers out the window Thursday. He said he and his father worry enough about neighborhood gang crime that they rarely leave their home. Hilawle said there was a bullet hole in the outside wall of his home.

Five-year-old Payton Benson lived and died in a neighborhood where the potential for street violence is an undercurrent of everyday life.
Most people who live and work in this pocket of north Omaha don't live in fear. They mow their lawns and walk to the corner store and let their children play outside.
