On the ice: The third annual University of Nebraska Medical Center Skate-a-thon for Parkinson’s, held recently at the UNMC ice rink, raised more than $23,000. Nearly 500 skaters and 750 people attended. Proceeds will go toward clinical and basic science Parkinson’s research at UNMC as well as the Parkinson’s Health Development Program, which offers affordable exercises and activities to improve the quality of life for persons with Parkinson’s. The event is the brainchild of Ted and Colleen Wuebben of Omaha. She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2005 at the age of 52. For three years, the Wuebbens flooded their backyard for the event. In 2011, they moved the event to the UNMC ice rink. She died Wednesday at her Omaha home from Parkinson’s and cancer.
