Chuck Hagel a point man on Syria
U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel phoned senior members of Congress late on Aug. 30 to discuss the use of chemical weapons outside Damascus, Syria, the previous week. President Obama is relying on Hagel, Secretary of State John Kerry and Vice President Joe Biden to advocate for U.S. military intervention against Bashar Assad's regime in Syria.

WASHINGTON — As a Republican senator from Nebraska, Chuck Hagel emerged as a prominent conservative critic of the Iraq War.
Specifically, he charged that Bush administration officials exploited the emotional aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks to push the country into a misguided military adventure on the basis of faulty intelligence about weapons of mass destruction.
