WASHINGTON — In what could be a crucial moment in the Obama administration’s efforts to advance the nomination of former Sen. Chuck Hagel as secretary of defense, the Nebraska Republican will meet this week with Sen. Charles Schumer, one of the most influential Jewish members of the Senate. Schumer is expected to press Hagel on issues concerning Iran and Israel.
Schumer, D-N.Y., will be among the first senators to meet with Hagel since his nomination last week. Schumer has told aides and other senators that he could be persuaded to support Hagel depending on the meeting’s outcome. Hagel’s nomination has been met with suspicion, and even outright hostility, among Republicans and Democrats who are strongly aligned with Jewish groups.
