A first for science, thanks to UNL-built drill

LINCOLN — A hot-water drilling system designed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln resulted in an ice-breaking moment: the first time scientists successfully bored through the Antarctic ice sheet to reach a subglacial lake.
The Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling project broke through to the lake Sunday.
