This column frequently mentions new books about Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and its chairman and CEO, Warren Buffett. Now careful readers may recognize the author of yet another Buffett book.

This one is published by The World-Herald and due for delivery in mid-April, just before the May 4 annual Berkshire shareholders meeting in Omaha.

The hardcover book, by yours truly, is titled “The Oracle & Omaha: How Warren Buffett and His Hometown Shaped Each Other” (224 pages, $29.95). Advance sales are now open at the newspaper's online shop,

A World-Herald book about Buffett was in the thinking stages before he bought this newspaper in 2011. For the past seven months it's been a nearly full-time project, alongside this weekly column (No. 250 is fast approaching) and the occasional breaking news story.

Finding a new topic was difficult, since there are dozens of books about Buffett. So we heeded his usual advice to stay within our “circle of competence.”

Namely, we figured that between my extended Omaha career, some focused reporting and the healthy archive of World-Herald stories, photos and clippings, we could tell an engaging story about the city and its most famous citizen.

The book holds both history and new material, including interviews with Buffett family members, co-workers, early shareholders and even local folks who missed Berkshire's financial landslide. We bring perspective to the lessons Buffett learned in Omaha and to his impact on the city he calls home.

We'll have more news about the book as the delivery date and the meeting approach, so stay tuned.

Help from Longoria

Singer-dancer Shakira accompanied Warren Buffett's son Howard on his humanitarian trips in 2009, and now actress Eva Longoria is helping with his agriculture-oriented anti-hunger campaign, too.

The two recently went to Guatemala and El Salvador, according to Hispanically Speaking News, where they met with farmers about a new cacao initiative and other efforts to improve crops and the marketing of produce.

The Omaha World-Herald Co. is owned by Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
