LINCOLN — Nebraska veterans and their spouses are invited to attend two upcoming Hiring Our Heroes job fairs in Omaha and Lincoln, Gov. Dave Heineman said Wednesday.
The job fair in Omaha will be held on Feb. 19 at the DC Centre, 11830 Stonegate Drive, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Lincoln fair will be held on April 1 at the Lancaster Event Center, 4100 N. 84th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
About 65 employers have signed up for the fairs, including Nebraska-based companies such as Werner Enterprises and Duncan Aviation.
Jafi Roskey, a U.S. Air Force veteran from Omaha, struggled for five months to find a job until she contacted a veterans service officer who suggested she attend one of the hiring fairs.
“I was able to have a face-to-face discussion on transitioning to civilian life,” Roskey said.
She learned how her logistics experience in the military could translate into skills in the job market. After attending a job fair in Papillion last year, she was hired by Werner. Since then she has been promoted to a corporate fleet manager position managing and mentoring 50 to 60 over-the-road truckers.
Veterans bring discipline, maturity, consistency, commitment and loyalty and experience, which makes them valuable to employers, said Maj. Gen. Daryl Bohac, Adjutant General of the Nebraska National Guard.
The fairs are a combined effort among the United States Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraska Department of Labor and the Nebraska National Guard with a goal of helping veterans and their spouses find meaningful employment in Nebraska.
