Two of Nebraska’s rising young chefs, Jarrod Lane and Jason Volkmer, both students at Omaha’s Metropolitan Community College, were among the five winners of a $3,000 culinary arts scholarship funded by Omaha Steaks through the James Beard Foundation, named for the famed American chef.

Five scholarships are given each year to students pursuing culinary studies in cooking, baking, writing, nutrition, hospitality management and food and wine studies.

James Beard, a popular television chef who died in 1985, worked with Omaha Steaks developing recipes and cookbooks.

“We congratulate this year’s recipients of the James Beard Foundation scholarships and we are honored to support their ongoing culinary education,” said Omaha Steaks senior vice president and family owner, Todd Simon.

“James Beard was a friend, advisor and creative resource to Omaha Steaks for many years and we are privileged to honor his legacy through these scholarships that enable his love of the art of cooking to live on.”

Nebraska winners Lane and Volkmer are also honing their skills outside of school. Lane, who is majoring in culinary arts and hospitality management, works as a lead cook at Sodexo, an international food and facilities management service company with Omaha locations. Volkmer, who is majoring culinary arts and management, works as a kitchen supervisor at Omaha’s Marriott Hotel.

Omaha Steaks, which was founded in 1917, is an Omaha-based, fifth-generation, family-owned company that markets and distributes grain-fed beef and other gourmet foods including seafood, pork, poultry, side dishes and desserts.
