Carol Fosse claims she's retiring.
The owner of Carol.Fosse. Contemporary Apparel in Rockbrook Village is closing the women's apparel store at the end of January and moving to Savannah, Ga., with her husband.
Fosse has told customers she plans to work on her golf game, but in truth she's going to work for one of her vendors.
“I'll do a lot of trade shows and travel the Southeast from Florida to North Carolina,” Fosse said. “My customers tell me that's not really retiring. But I don't have to work every day. I can take weeks off as I want.”
For Fosse that looks a lot like retirement after years of working six- and seven-day weeks as a retailer.
Fosse, who is originally from Chicago, has been an area retailer since 1977, when she and her husband, Omaha native Kerry Fosse, launched the Racqueteer at 1336 S. 119th St. The store sold tennis, racquetball and squash equipment and golf apparel. In 1996, the Racqueteer moved to 114th Street and West Dodge Road after the store was damaged by a fire.
After the move, Fosse began carrying women's golf equipment and apparel under the name Red Tee. In 2001, Fosse moved to Rockbrook. “I told my husband I'm just going to take my women's stuff and move to Rockbrook.”
Fosse said the store would probably remain open through January. “I've got 37 years worth of paper in my back-backroom. I've got a lot of stuff to go through.”
The store's merchandise, which includes women's apparel, scarves and belts, has been discounted 20 percent to 70 percent. Customers also will find $10 and $20 racks. The store is located at 2900 S. 110th Court.
