The opening of the new Walmart Supercenter at 50th and Ames drew more than 200 people this morning, including Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert; Ben Gray, the district's city councilman, and Winsley Durand, recruitment director at the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce.

Gray described the store's opening as cause for celebration and a testament to North Omaha's continued economic revival.

“We see this as just the beginning. There's more to come,” Gray said.

Store manager Todd Kjosen welcomed shoppers, who gathered under an arch of blue and white balloons.

By 9 a.m. shoppers began filtering in and out of the store to linger in the aisles and fill their carts with groceries, or, in the case of Susan Glass, pick up a bag of cat food.

“I love this,” Glass said, as she surveyed the store's layout. “It's right down the street from my house.”
