If you missed today's opening of the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 6710 S. 167th St., don't despair. The store will hold a community welcoming event Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors and their children can sample free food, while supplies last, and enjoy face painting and cupcake decorating and eating.

About 150 people were on hand for Wednesday's 7:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony.

As part of the opening activities, Walmart presented $109,000 in grants to local groups: $80,000 to Heartland Hope Mission and $29,000 to Food Bank for the Heartland.

The Neighborhood Market is about one-third the size of a Supercenter and employs about 95 part-time and full-time employees. Located at the crossroads of 168th and Harrison streets, the new store is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
