An upside of walking seven blocks uphill in the cold to get my car from the shop yesterday afternoon was this view of construction in progress at the Lerner Shops building at 16th and Harney Streets. You can see two new floors built on top of the original 1947 structure.

Cindy Gonzalez has written about the $6 million project, which will include 40 one- and two-bedroom market-rate apartments with rents ranging from $865 to $1,600, as well as retail and commercial space.

Developer Seldin Co. and contractor Dicon bought the Lerner building from the city for $157,500, Gonzalez reported. Before that, it had sat largely vacant for 17 years. Earlier plans for the property called for demolition and parking.
