Hy-Vee aims to improve sustainability of seafood

Hy-Vee, the West Des Moines-based grocery retailer, is pledging to improve the sustainability of its fresh and frozen seafood offerings. To find seafood that is responsibly harvested or raised, the retail grocer has partnered with FishWise, a Santa Cruz, Calif.-based nonprofit committed to protecting marine resources through the promotion of environmentally responsible business practices.

“We aim to be a destination for sustainable seafood, where customers can be confident that they are supporting the health of their families and that of the oceans,” said Nate Stewart, Hy-Vee’s vice president of perishables.

As one of its first moves, the grocery chain is replacing its Russian king crab products with Alaskan king crab from a U.S. fishery that has healthy stocks and strong management. The Russian king crab fishery is reportedly overexploited and has been the target of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing.

Hy-Vee said it is committed to selling fresh and frozen seafood that is highly rated by the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program, or achieves an equivalent rating, by the end of 2015.
