Hiring procedures, tax reform top-of-mind for small businesses

Small businesses in Nebraska are most concerned about legislative issues affecting the hiring and interview processes as well as tax reform proposals, according to the lobbying agenda released by the state's National Federation of Independent Business this week.

The small-business advocacy organization distributes a four-question ballot annually to gauge the sentiment of its membership based on the immediacy of certain proposals and, most importantly, bills' perceived impact to small business.

Questions for Nebraska's NFIB membership include whether or not they support legislation that prohibits employers from discriminating against unemployed applicants during the hiring process; another probes members on whether or not employers should have to wait until after interviewing applicants to review their criminal histories.

Small businesses (those with 500 or fewer employees) were 96.6 percent of total employers in Nebraska in 2010 and employed about 51 percent of the private-sector work force, according to the most recent data from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The Nebraska association has seen modest growth in recent years and has around 4,500 members.
