Gretna will soon have a hardware store.

Bill Sapp of Ashland, Neb., has plans for an Ace Hardware near U.S. Highway 6 and West Gruenther Road in the former D&K’s Gretna Cafe space, and he’s aiming for a Dec. 1 opening. The space is being remodeled and expanded.

The building was a bowling alley years ago when Sapp bought it, he said, before he turned it into a convenience store and the cafe, which closed a few months ago.

“Gretna didn’t have a hardware store, and I think it will be a big asset to the community of Gretna,” he said.

About five or six employees will be hired to staff the store, and Sapp’s grandson, Alex Ziegenbein, will serve as the general manager.

Sapp said his “day job” is being one of the owners of Sapp Bros. Travel Centers and Petroleum, the truck-stop chain known for the water towers that look like coffee pots.
