The folks at Max I. Walker Cleaners are already getting ready for the Ultra Chic Prom fundraiser, scheduled for Feb. 8 at the Palace Ballroom in the Ramada Plaza Hotel on 72nd and Grover Streets.

But they need your help. Max I. Walker, which was founded in 1917, has already collected 1,000 dresses for the coming seventh annual event, but to reach its goal and surpass last year's numbers, the company is asking for donations of gently used homecoming, prom or bridesmaid dresses or other formal party gowns.

The company will clean, press and prepare the gowns at no cost and sell them for $25 on the day of the event.

Dresses can be donated at any of Max I. Walker's 24 locations. All funds raised from dress and raffle sales will be given to the Open Door Mission's Lydia House to benefit single mothers and families. Last year, the Ultra Chic Prom Boutique raised a record-breaking $14,700 for the Lydia House in just six hours — bringing the six-year total from the event to nearly $55,800.

Every dress donated will allow entry to win a $500 getaway. Participants can complete an entry form at any Max I. Walker location. For more information, visit or visit
