Cornerstone Bank said Wednesday that former Husker football standout Jeff Krejci was been named president. He had held the same post at First State Bank Nebraska for many years.

The York, Neb.-based Cornerstone Bank, 11th in state deposit-market share, said Chairman and Chief Executive Kelly Holthus will retain those offices but he has delegated some of his management responsibilities, necessitating a new president.

“The rapid growth of Cornerstone Bank in recent years calls for a new organizational structure to not only manage the banking activities but also insurance, trust, farm management, information technology, retail investments and the armored car businesses,” the bank said in a statement.

Krejci also will join the bank’s board, effective Jan. 13.

A safety, Krejci was a three-year letter winner at the University of Nebraska and an All-Big Eight selection in 1981; he played in one exhibition game for the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles in 1982.

“It was a great experience, even if I didn’t make it,” Krejci said.

A native of Schuyler, Neb., Krejci is the son of a banker and has been with First State Bank Nebraska since 1987. He said he always figured he would wind up in banking.

“I started in coaching; I wanted to be a college coach,” Krejci said, speaking of a short stint as a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska. “I got very hungry.”

As part of the management changes at Cornerstone, Executive Vice Presidents Kris Holoch and Kendell Holthus will assume additional responsibilities, said a statement from the bank, which is owned by the Holthus family.

Cornerstone Bank has $1.3 billion in assets and has 33 branches in 24 Nebraska cities and towns.
