Cabela's, the hunting and outdoor outfitter, said Tuesday it plans to expand its Sidney-based corporate offices with the addition of a new office building, located immediately west of its headquarters.

Construction of the building is scheduled to begin spring 2014 and be completed by early 2015. The new structure will complement — not replace — the retailer's existing corporate headquarters, which opened in 1998, company officials said.

“Cabela's has a long and rich history in the city of Sidney. ... As Cabela's and Sidney have continued to grow, so, too, has the need for additional work space,” Tommy Millner, Cabela's chief executive, said in a statement.

Cabela's officials were not available Tuesday to provide details about the building's square footage, height or cost, or how many employees will work there.

The company said it will finance much of the project itself but plans also to seek tax-increment financing to offset certain public improvements associated with the project. TIF uses part of the future property taxes from a development to help pay for improvements.

Cabela's, which has been expanding its retail operations, plans to open 17 new stores in the next two years. The company currently operates 47 stores in the United States and Canada, employing more than 17,000 people.

Cabela's said the new building should meet its growth requirements through 2017.

The retailer, which was founded in 1961, is currently renovating a separate space, its original downtown office at 813 13th Ave. When complete, the downtown location will house about 130 employees.
