Patriot Homebrew Supply, a new shop catering to the growing number of people who brew their own beer, will open for business today at 10 a.m. at 2929 N. 204th St. in the Elkhorn area.

From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., home-brewers are invited to check out the shop, ask questions and enjoy a bratwurst. There won’t be beer available, as Patriot Homebrew doesn’t have a liquor license, though that may eventually change.

Owner Matt Misfeldt, a veteran who has served in Afghanistan — hence the shop’s name — decided to open a home-brew shop after visiting one in San Diego. In addition to brewing ingredients and equipment, that store also had a tiny brewery where customers could taste different beers and then leave with the recipe and ingredients.

Misfeldt’s own shop will begin as just that — a shop — but he hopes to eventually have an in-store nanobrewery, too.

Patriot Homebrew is divided into two rooms — one dedicated to equipment and another to ingredients. The equipment room includes things like fermentation buckets, kegs and kits for making small batches of beer, and Misfeldt was careful to order inventory that appeals to both the new brewer and the more advanced one.

Over on the ingredient side, Misfeldt will sell malts, yeasts, grains and hops, including rare and local varieties. Patriot Homebrew will be the first Midwestern home-brew shop to offer Meridian Hops from Oregon, he said. Misfeldt also plans to offer local hops.

In a few months, Misfeldt plans to begin offering home-brewing classes. He’s also offering local home-brew clubs meeting space and club discounts.

After this weekend’s grand opening, Patriot Homebrew will be open Tuesdays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
