The Better Business Bureau is warning Nebraska property owners about a Wisconsin roofing company it says posed as a government agency to lure customers in the wake of hailstorms.

The BBB said the roofer sent mailings to thousands of Nebraskans, pretending to be a government agency called the Bureau of Transactions and Consumer Awareness and described as protecting homeowners from scams. The mailing recommended six “approved” Nebraska companies, all of which the BBB traced to the Wisconsin roofer.

The companies owned by roofer Brandon Domack are under review by the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin. Some of the six false company names were similar to established Nebraska companies.

Domack could not be reached for comment Friday.

The mailing came in the form of a door tag that said homeowners could be placed on a “Do Not Knock List” by calling a phone number, which the bureau said seems to have been designed to direct customers to the company. There is no government Do Not Knock List, the bureau said.

The BBB said it has asked Domack to stop using the leads obtained from the mailing, and to stop the deceptive practices used to obtain them.

BBB President Jim Hegarty said he has never seen a scheme where a business posed as a government agency. He said the company also is advertising locally on Craigslist for agents to canvass for leads.

Hegarty said the bureau has referred the issue to law enforcement for investigation.

Consumers who have contacted any of the six companies listed on the mailing can call the BBB for assistance at 800-649-6814. Press 4 for an operator.
