Hello, awards season.

This weekend kicks off a four-week stretch of Academy Award contenders.

• "Prisoners," a child-abduction thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gylenhaal, opened wide Friday.

• Sept. 27: The wide release of Ron Howard's Formula One pic "Rush," currently showing in five markets.

• Oct. 4: The opening of George Clooney and Sandra Bullock's lost-in-space "Gravity," directed by Alfonso Cuaron.

• Oct. 11: Paul Greengrass' "Captain Phillips," the story of a naval ship boarded by Somali pirates in 2009, starring Tom Hanks.

As for this weekend, "Prisoners," and its reported $46 million production budget, is on par to score near $20 million at the domestic box office. Dance flick "Battle of the Year," which cost around $20 million to produce, is projected to gross $5 million.

Elsewhere, the anticipated (and appropriately named) J.D. Salinger documentary "Salinger," which features interviews with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, Tom Wolfe, Gore Vidal and more, bows at Film Streams.
