It's a slow film weekend nationally, but not here in Omaha.

Alexander Payne's sixth feature-length film bows in Omaha. "Nebraska," a black-and-white dramedy that follows a father and son's trek from Montana to Nebraska to claim a lottery prize that may or may not exist, is the Omaha native's first since 2011's "The Descendants."

"Descendants" netted five Oscar nominations, including one to Payne for Best Director and another for Best Picture. "Nebraska's" also a likely awards contender; it was nominated earlier this year for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Nationally, "The Best Man Holiday" is your lone wide release. The pic's directed by Malcolm D. Lee of "Undercover Brother" fame (and "Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins" shame). Terrence Howard, most recently in "The Butler" and "Prisoners," is the biggest name in an ensemble cast.

"Best Man Holiday" is projected to gross about $20.5 million stateside in its three-day frame.

Next weekend, of course, marks the release of "Hunger Games: Catching Fire." At $168 million, its projected three-day gross is the highest of any remaining film this year and in the range of "The Avengers'" record $207.4 million domestic open.
