My five: Nicholas Burroughs, an ad agency graphic designer

Not long ago, Nicholas Burroughs set out to watch every episode of “Seinfeld.” Over the next two months, he burned through all 180 shows, at a rate of 2.81 per day.

Such binge-watching is not exactly unusual these days, but Burroughs took his experience a step further. He created a logo for “Seinfeldathon 2013,” as he called the spree.

Burroughs, 27, is a graphic designer with the local agency Eleven19 and a board member of the Nebraska chapter of AIGA, the professional association for design.

Details matter to him. Whether he's determining the proper kerning between two letters on a poster, advocating for the appropriate amount of pizza toppings or enjoying the pinnacle of 1990s NBC comedies (“Seinfeld” season five, episode five: “The Bris”), he has design on his mind.

His five favorite things:

1. Field Notes.

Earlier this year, Burroughs helped bring renowned designer Aaron Draplin, a personal hero, to Omaha for an AIGA event. So it's no surprise he's a fan of this Draplin-designed line of pocket-sized notebooks. “As much as I love technology, I adore the analog quality of Field Notes,” he said.

2. “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.”

“Wes Anderson is my favorite director, and this film is my favorite of all-time. A great ensemble cast, and it makes me incredibly happy each time I watch it.”

3. “Things I have Learned In My Life So Far” by Stefan Sagmeister.

Burroughs credits Austrian-born graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister with influencing his own career path, but it's the personal side of this 2008 autobiography that continues to resonate. “I've applied many of the things Stefan learned throughout his life to my own life, and often repeat them in my head over and over when I need that extra push,” he said.

4. Arsenal F.C.

When the English Premier League season starts later this month, Burroughs will cheer on his favorite soccer club, London's Arsenal.

5. Pizza.

Burroughs loves pizza so much he's created design standards for it: “I have a strict three topping maximum rule, and also firmly believe that if a pizza is not good with just crust, sauce and cheese, then it's not worth even putting anything else on it. I also ritualistically eat pizza and drink beer every Friday night, in an event known as Pizza Friday, which I also designed a logo for.”
