In my book, playwright Arthur Kopit was right. His and composer Maury Yestin's version of “Phantom” is a better show than the more famous Andrew Lloyd Webber version. Both are based on Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel “The Phantom of the Opera.”

A first-rate college production of “Phantom” opened Thursday at Creighton University. Kopit, a three-time Tony nominee and twice a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, stood with the rest of the audience and applauded heartily at curtain call.
