The French press is a good place for beginners. It's the most forgiving of all the manual brewing techniques. A French press costs $10-40, depending on the brand and the number of cups it makes. Many who hand-brew coffee at home have French presses in more than one size. A French press is also good for larger crowds.

The Clever coffee dripper is $22 and is a good second step for someone who is already familiar with a French press and wants to try something new. The coffee is brewed with a filter instead of directly with the water. The Clever makes one cup of coffee per use.
