Greg Hamill, a 12-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, died Friday at Methodist Hospital.
Hamill, 43, who was a detective, was admitted to the hospital last week. He died of complications of the H1N1 strain of influenza, said Officer James Shade, a police spokesman.
Hamill's organs will be donated, Shade said.
“He genuinely cared about people,” Shade said. “He had a huge heart.”
Officer Michael Pecha, another police spokesman, asked area residents to keep Hamill's wife, Vanessa, and their two children in their thoughts and prayers.
A fund for the Hamill family has been set up at the Omaha Police Federal Credit Union. Checks should be made out to the Greg Hamill Fund.
The credit union has offices at at 3003 S. 82nd Ave. and 10791 S. 72nd St. in Papillion.
