The UNO softball team wasn’t going to let that little snowstorm socking the southeast keep it off the field this weekend.
The Mavericks were supposed to fly to Auburn for the Tiger Invitational on Thursday morning but the flight was canceled. A travel agent was able to get them on another flight to Atlanta on Friday night.
They’ll only play four games now instead of five, but they feel fortunate, coach Jeanne Scarpello said. Many other teams have been forced to stay home.
“This is one the players wanted to be a part of it,” she said. “Sitting here doesn’t get us any better. We need to get out on the field and get on dirt. We don’t want to get behind.”
UNO will now play Marshall, which won the Conference USA tournament last season, on Saturday at 1 p.m., followed by a 3:30 matchup with 4-1-1 Auburn. On Sunday, the Mavericks will take on 1-3 Loyola Chicago at 9 a.m. and 4-0 Western Illinois at 11.
UNO went 3-2 at the Red Desert Classic in Utah last weekend.
Pitcher Dana Elsasser compiled 21 strikeouts in picking up the three wins, She has a 1.29 ERA. Freshman Lia Mancuso batted .417 and was the only Mav to hit in every game. Allie Mathewson hit .429 with a .579 on-base percentage.
“Those guys were on fire,” Scarpello said.
Campbell Ditto also was one of the bright spots with three homers in the five games.
“Our defense hit about .976, which for coming out and never being on dirt, we felt very comfortable with,” Scarpello said. “Our bats weren’t where they should have been, but the first time out, sometimes there is some jitters.”
