This weekend, you can see a laser show, check out prom dresses or snag some seeds for your garden. We recommend these events:
» Almost prom season: Max I. Walker will have its seventh annual Ultra Chic Prom Boutique from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in the Omaha Ballroom of the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Convention Center, 72nd and Grover Streets. The event will include a noon fashion show. Dressing rooms are available on-site. All dresses will be $25 (cash only), and proceeds will benefit Lydia House.
» Home and garden: Been meaning to spruce up your home or start a garden? The Omaha Home and Garden Expo at the CenturyLink Center has you covered. See Amy Matthews of HGTV's “Renovation Raiders” today at 2 p.m. or Jared Walker of HGTV's “Rate My Space,” today at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. There will be an interior design showcase and 600 booths featuring tons of products and services. The expo is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children younger than 5.
» Lasers rock: Mueller Planetarium, at the University of Nebraska State Museum in Morrill Hall, 645 N. 14th St., Lincoln, is bringing rock 'n' roll to life with three different laser shows today. Check out a Beatles-themed show at 7 p.m. and a show set to the music of U2 at 8 p.m. A show centered around Pink Floyd starts up at 9 p.m. The Floyd show is not appropriate for children.
Tickets are on sale today in the planetarium lobby from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at the front desk of the Nebraska State Museum from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $8 for nonmembers (all ages) and $7 for Friends of the Museum members (with ID card).
» Seed share: Bring your seeds to the Douglas County Extension Office, 8015 West Center Road, today for the fourth annual seed share from noon to 2 p.m. Grab free seeds from other attendees to get your garden ready for the spring. There will also be Master Gardeners in attendance to give growing advice.
» Oscars evening: The Omaha Symphony presents songs from Oscar-winning films tonight at 8 at the Holland Performing Arts Center, 1200 Douglas St. Hear tracks from “Gone With the Wind,” “The Godfather” and more. Tickets are $19 to $70.
» Dance performance: Ballet Nebraska performs a series of duets tonight at 7:30 in a new performance space. Head out to the Encore, 2819 S. 125th Ave., Suite 268. Tickets are $30 at the door.
» Historical talk: On Sunday, Dr. Marguerita Washington, publisher of the Omaha Star, will speak about the growth of the paper over the years and how it all got started. The talk, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., will take place at Metropolitan Community College's Fort Omaha campus, 5300 N. 30th St., in Building 10, Room 110.
